The abandonment of old industrial buildings and structures is an inadvertent byproduct of progress and development. In Romania, unlike many other European nations, the strategic role of these resources is still undervalued.
This project proposes a methodological approach for enhancing the value of the Limestone Funicular in Reșița, Romania, which was abandoned 18 years ago together with advancements in steel manufacturing. The Funicular, which crosses the civic city center at a maximum height of 40m, can become a local sustainable source of development for the city and its inhabitants. The approach can transform the Funicular from an abandoned tool of the local steelworks into a green space above the city, a new opportunity for the growing tourism industry in the area, and a new recreation opportunity for the city's inhabitants.
